Routine labs are not a report card on your health. They are one piece of a larger picture that includes your symptoms, medical history, medications, family history, examination findings, and prior test results. A small change may be temporary and harmless. A result within the stated range may still deserve attention when it has changed significantly from your usual baseline.
What “Normal” Means on a Lab Report
Most laboratory reports include a reference range next to each result. This range is based on values commonly found in a large group of generally healthy people. Mild elevations are common and should be interpreted carefully rather than assumed to point to one cause.
Cholesterol and Lipid Testing
A lipid panel typically includes total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These values help estimate cardiovascular risk, but they are not interpreted in isolation.
LDL is often called “bad” cholesterol because higher levels can contribute to plaque buildup in arteries over time. Urinalysis
A urinalysis checks urine for signs of infection, blood, protein, glucose, ketones, and other changes. It may be ordered during a wellness visit, for urinary symptoms, or to monitor kidney health and diabetes.
For example, protein in the urine may need follow-up in someone with high blood pressure or diabetes, while glucose or ketones can provide useful information about blood sugar regulation. Why Trends Often Matter More Than Flags
